Film History & Theory
The story of film is an incredibly rich journey that winds through countries, movements, forces, personalities, visions, theories, and technologies. From the extraordinarily fertile period of invention that marked the early development of film, to the rapidly evolving digital landscape of the present, we will study how the medium has changed over time. Through lecture, discussion, viewing, and reading, students will examine key films and filmmakers that have pushed the medium forward. A deepened understanding of how writers and directors have continually reinvented the ways in which stories are told will set the stage for a richer exploration of story and screenwriting in the next unit.
