Website in a Weekend (Online)

Have you been putting off (re)building your portfolio website? Let’s knock it out in a weekend.

This class will meet online, Saturday & Sunday Sep 17-18, 2022 @ 10am – 1pm ET

You know your portfolio website needs to be built or rebuilt but you keep putting it off. You start working on it, then other, more pressing things pull you away. Sound familiar?

If this is you, sign up for this workshop, and together we will knock your website out in 2 days.

In our first session, we will get to know each other and share your website goals. Then we’ll dive into building a site on Squarespace. You’ll want to come with your portfolio images organized and exported for the web (72ppi, 1000-1600 pixels on the long edge). You will learn how Squarespace is set up, how to create pages, add content, style typography, and implement a color palette. Following this session, you will work independently on your site prior to the second session. So make sure you set aside a few hours that afternoon or evening to continue your project.

In our second session, we’ll start by answering questions that came up during the independent work time on Saturday afternoon/evening. You will share your progress with the other participants. Sarah will give feedback and suggestions on your site. We’ll get into SEO and accessibility best practices, connecting a domain. At the end of the session, we will put your site live!

In this class you will come away with:

• A mobile-friendly portfolio website on Squarespace 
• The knowhow to keep your website up to date

Your workshop includes:

• Step-by-step instructions on how to create a website on Squarespace
• Real-time feedback on your work from a professional web designer
• Tutorials you can refer back to for updating your website in the future and between sessions.

Prerequisites and Expectations:

• The images for your website are exported for the web (72ppi 1000-1600 pixels on the long edge prior to the course.
• Text for your website is ready to go (e.g. artist statement, workshop descriptions, etc)
• A defined goal for your website.
• A wireframe for your website (optional)
• Set aside time Saturday afternoon to continue working on your website.

FAQs

Will I come away with a finished website?
That depends on you! I will provide the instruction and framework for you to create a website within a weekend. If you come with all of the prerequisites mentioned and dedicate time to your website between classes, it is very likely that you will have a wonderful portfolio website by the end of the weekend. Of course, you may want to continue working on your website after the weekend. Does it matter what website platform I use?
Yes. This workshop is specifically for Squarespace websites.

Can I build an e-commerce site in this workshop?
The focus of this workshop is on standard portfolio websites. However, if you are a quick learner and/or willing to put in the time between sessions, you can definitely create an e-commerce site. If we have time, I can definitely go over the basics of setting up an e-commerce site.

Will you cover online booking in this workshop?
No. Squarespace Scheduling is a fantastic app that is integrated with your website and I have a separate tutorial pack available to help you set that up.

Can I build a membership website in this workshop?
I will not be covering Squarespace Member Areas in this workshop. Of course, you are welcome to use the workshop time as you see fit.

Will I learn how to set up email marketing in this workshop?
No. Squarespace Email is integrated into your website, but we will not be covering that in this workshop.
