This ongoing 90-minute series is geared toward photographers and the curious collector, where we go behind-the-scenes to have a flexible, honest and open conversation between a dealer and one of their artists. From the gallery’s perspective, topics may range from how the dealer met the photographer and how they now work together, to how the gallery defines its brand, how new talent is discovered to the challenges of running a gallery in today’s world. Of particular interest is what attracted the photographer to the dealer and vice versa! Collector, advisor and Maine Media faculty member, Alice Sachs Zimet, moderates.

Annu Palakunnathu Matthew’s photo-based installation work is a striking blend of still and moving imagery. Her larger work draws on her research on archival photographs as a source of inspiration to examine concepts of memory and to re-examine historical narratives. Matthew often uses archival imagery and family photographs as a starting point as they are familiar to a viewer, which allows the work to be more accessible. The preliminary research along with the images enables her to interpret the “known” history in order to give the viewer the opportunity to question established narratives and consider parallel realities, identities, and histories. Matthew makes use of the ever-expanding digital toolbox to make her work increasingly more accessible.

Matthew’s recent solo exhibitions include the Royal Ontario Museum, Canada, Nuit Blanche Toronto, and sepiaEYE, NYC. Matthew has exhibited her work at the RISD Museum, Newark Art Museum, MFA Boston, San Jose Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts (TX), Victoria & Albert Museum (London), 2018 Kochi-Muziris Biennale, 2018 Fotofest Biennial, 2009 Guangzhou Photo Biennial as well as at the Smithsonian Institution, DC.
Grants and fellowships that have supported her work include a MacColl Johnson, John Guttman, two Fulbright Fellowships and grants from the Rhode Island State Council of the Arts. In addition, she has been an artist in residence at Yaddo and MacDowell.
Esa Epstein is an archivist, curator, and director of sepiaEYE gallery (2009). The gallery is dedicated to showing a spectrum of modern and contemporary photography and video work from Asia. As a curator, many of her exhibitions have been mounted in museums internationally and have been reviewed in numerous publications, most notably, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The New York Sun, ARTnews, and Art in America.
sepiaEYE artists have gained critical acclaim and international recognition, and their works are included in major European & US museum collections and private collections. Epstein has published eight titles on modern and contemporary photography.
In her former role as the Executive Director of Sepia International and The Alkazi Collection (1995-2009), Epstein helped build an impressive collection of Indian photography and photographic history. She continues to offers her expertise in this area to advise both private and public collection acquisitions.
sepiaEYE is dedicated to showing a spectrum of modern and contemporary photography and video work. Established in September 2009 by Esa Epstein, sepiaEYE will continue to foster artist development through exhibitions, publications, trade fairs, and festivals.
We are honored to represent the Estate of Bhupendra Karia. sepiaEYE is interested in the rediscovery of lesser known artists and significant periods within the history of photography and in the support of emerging artists. During her tenure as the Executive Director and Curator of SEPIA International and The Alkazi Collection (1995-2009), Esa Epstein had curated over 60 exhibitions of photography. From 19th century practitioners to artists entering the field, her expertise has supported the careers of Raghubir Singh, Richard Bartholemew, Miyako Ishiuchi, Sunil Gupta, Jungjin Lee, Koichiro Kurita, Ketaki Sheth, Osamu James Nakagawa, among others.
Epstein has published eight titles on modern and contemporary photography including: Atul Bhalla: Yamuna Walk (sepiaEYE & UW Press, 2011), Jungjin Lee: Wind, essays by Eugenia Parry and Vicki Goldberg (Aperture/SEPIA, 2009); Ketaki Sheth: Bombay Mix, preface by Suketu Mehta (Dewi Lewis/SEPIA, 2007); and Vivan Sundaram: Re-take of Amrita, essays by Vivan Sundaram and Wu Hung (SEPIA, 2006).
SEPIA exhibitions have been reviewed in numerous publications, most notably, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The New York Sun, ARTnews, and Art in America. Gallery artists have gained critical acclaim and international recognition, and their works are included in the collections of major museums and private collections in the US and Europe.
