This workshop is for young photographers interested in advancing their technical and artistic potentials. A 2-week workshop with an opportunity for our alumni and other advanced teen photographers to expand their knowledge of fine art B&W photography including the Zone System, view cameras, advanced darkroom techniques and fine silver printing, while they complete a portfolio representing their individual artistic voices. We explore the use of large format cameras, toning and print statement, archival printing processes and print presentation.

This course is an opportunity for experienced students to develop and refine their personal vision through additional field and darkroom work as they edit and sequence their images into a personal portfolio suitable for college applications. There are field trips to explore the landscape and architecture, farms and forest streams, fishing villages and flea markets, as well as the people and personalities who live and work on the Maine Coast. There are lectures and demonstrations, discussions and critiques to help you find the strongest threads to your work.

This workshop is open to alumni of previous Young Artist Workshops, and others by permission of the instructor or through a portfolio review. Students must be proficient in the use of their 35mm camera and the darkroom.

Prerequisite:
This one-week program is designed for high school students between the ages of 14 and 18. Students must be proficient in the use of their 35mm camera and basic darkroom skills or previously completed the Young Photographers workshop.

What you will learn:
Students leave this workshop with a complete single portfolio of work for college preparation or future photography work. Become proficient with the tools, technique and experimentation which enables students to explore other level 2+3 workshops.

What you will need:
Students should bring a 35mm manual film camera, lens, and film. Unfortunately Maine Media doesn’t have film, film cameras or paper available for loan or purchase. Quantities and types will be provided in your acceptance packet.

About the Young Artists Program: Young Artists’ days are comprised of both classroom and field/location work: lectures and critique, demonstrations, shooting, editing, writing, computer workflow and/or darkroom work, depending on the workshop. All instructors are talented industry professionals as well as experienced educators, and each works with a teaching assistant, providing additional support for their class. The students are busy all day and into the mid-evening hours, attending presentations from visiting master faculty.

All Young Artists reside at a nearby residence (a motel-style building, with four students to a room, gender specific, and private bath) located 3/4 of a mile from campus. The property is controlled by Maine Media Workshops and is used exclusively by students and their counselors. Students are shuttled to the main campus each morning for breakfast and to begin their day, and are driven back at the end of the each day, following their last class or other scheduled activity. All meals are taken together. Parents can indicate any special dietary needs upon registration. Counselors supervise the students 24 hours a day, and help make group decisions about weekend activities like swimming, bowling, and hiking. Coin laundry facilities are available on campus. A lobster dinner is served (there are other choices) on the last Friday night of each workshop, and all Workshops students gather for an evening presentation of highlights from the week’s work. Parents are welcome to attend and meal tickets may be purchased in the Registration Office.

We recommend students have access to $75 over week  for incidentals, snacks, movies, field trips etc.

Check-in is on Sunday, between 3 and 6 and departure is on Saturday morning.

A portfolio review is required for this class.

Students may request a transcript be sent to their high school for possible credit.

Tuition Note: includes room and board
