Class meets over 2 weeks on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, Feb 19, 21, 23 & Feb 26, 28, Mar 1 from 12-5pm ET with 1:1 instruction.

In this two-week workshop participants will explore advanced dynamics relating to filmmaking pre-production, production, and post-production. Guided by the core instructor and accomplished guest speakers, participants will examine concepts relating to directorial perspective and technique and explore how to master the look of a film. Students will also have access to 1:1 time with the instructor.

Who is this course for?

This online workshop is ideal for advanced students or filmmakers who are getting ready to shoot a project and would like to up their game, expand their skill sets, and leave with new confidence.

Topics include:

  • How to prepare a lookbook to help define the visual impact of your film.
  • How to use image, color, and framing to amplify the story’s theme and emotional core.
  • Storyboarding.
  • Completing test shots.
  • Developing a shot list.

To deepen your skills as a director, you’ll examine how to refine your concept to clarify a directorial point-of-view, learn how to audition actors, and be introduced to the language that leads to effective performances.

Whether you shoot your own films or work with a cinematographer, you’ll benefit from examining nuances that expand your understanding of cinematography and lighting. You’ll also learn new possibilities in post-production: how to heighten your film’s impact through color grading and sound design.

Alex Burnett is a New England-based filmmaker and editor who has worked within the worlds of narrative fiction, documentary, experimental cinema, and virtual reality. Having worked as an editor for National Geographic, the NFL, Colgate University, Vitec Group, and Schiempflüg NYC, he has experience with a vast range of companies and artists. His passion lies in creatively tackling the many challenges that come with telling stories through film.
