August in Maine is a garden paradise! For a few short weeks each summer, mid-coast Maine is home to some of the most beautiful American gardens.

In this unique Garden Photography Workshop, we will take field trips to savor and photograph the many kinds of gardens in the area surrounding the Maine Media facilities in Rockport, including a botanical garden, flower farms, and horticultural nurseries. We will also have exclusive access to some of the area’s most exquisite private gardens.

As we explore the gardens, we will hone the technical craft of garden photography, and learn how to become more powerful and creative photographers. The Garden Photography Workshop with Harold Davis will emphasize best practices in field flower and garden photography.

Classroom technique sessions will take an in-depth look into macro flower and plant photography. You will learn when and how to apply hyperfocal techniques to focus. In addition, the Garden Photography Workshop with Harold Davis will also cover how to extend exposure and dynamic range using high dynamic range (HDR) photography, as well as multi-RAW processing. Specialized creative techniques such as multiple exposure and in-camera motion (ICM) will be explained and practiced.

In addition to camera and post-processing techniques, good garden photography means gaining an understanding of garden design, horticulture, and the visual aspects of perspective and composition. Our classroom sessions will cover these topics. We will also have creative review sessions that will follow each participant’s progress throughout the workshop, with the goal of producing a striking and cohesive body of work with a unique point of view, and to enhance the enjoyment and understanding of floral, botanical, and garden photography.
