Advanced Alternative Photographic Processes is a perfect match for image makers who have completed the Exploring Alternative Photographic Processes workshop or have extensive experience with alternative photographic processes. It is also the workshop for students that want additional exposure to instruction and feedback, working time, dedicated space and materials to refine their skills and to focus their energy on a specific project or process. Participants receive individual guidance and considered feedback on work in progress. Along with critique and new ideas to motivate and create, the class aims to foster a challenging and progressive environment. History of photography is discussed and tied to the techniques which expand students’ working knowledge and personal connection to the medium. Individual process demonstrations are given on a daily basis and an exploration into varying processes of interest is strongly encouraged.
In this advanced course, students delve deeply into platinum / palladium, and developer and paper choices, salted paper and an array of gold toners, Kallitypes and toners, Argyrotype, Cyanotype, gum bichromate & gum combination techniques, albumen, and Ziatype. In addition, the class also covers introduction to the field-wet-plate process and chemistry. Students have access to a complete digital negative production set-up in the lab facility for producing contact negatives. While most printing is done in the sun, UV exposure units are available for printing on the rare cloudy or rainy days.
This workshop is designed for students who have completed the Exploring Alternative Photographic Processes workshop or have a strong familiarity and experience working with alternative photographic processes. A letter with specific recommendations on what to bring will be sent to all participants prior to the workshop.
Admission is based on experience and level of familiarity; portfolio review; or by instructor’s permission.

Brenton holds his MFA in photography from the Savannah College of Art & Design. He is the Chair of the Professional Certificate in Visual Storytelling program at Maine Media College. His teaching specialties include, B&W Craft, Historic Processes, and the History of Photography at MMC. Brenton is an enthusiastic workshop leader exhibiting special care and interest in the teaching process and for his students.
