It is true that travel can inspire, stimulating all your senses as you wander with your camera through new and exciting surroundings. But your ability to maintain your concentration amidst the sights, sounds and smells in exotic, often chaotic environments is one of the keys to coming away with strong images. In this advanced course, documentarian and wanderer Steve Simon will provide tips and techniques for the traveling photographer gleaned from adventures to more than 40 countries on six continents. This workshop is designed for photographers interested in telling stories through photographs.
We will use our Maine workshop base as our travel destination to make new work.
You’ll learn about strategies for photographing strangers in different cultures as well as creating a sense of place for more personal travel stories when shooting landscapes, details, food, night scenes and even documenting travel itself. We will look at your photographic strengths and weaknesses and you will be encouraged to follow your instincts to make more personal work.
We will discuss the ethics and legalities surrounding street photography worldwide. Through photographic exercises designed to extend your photographic boundaries combined with lectures and constructive group critiques, we push forward together to overcome photographic fears. Our daily critique sessions will be a “safe place” for group discussions with suggestions and new ideas to push ourselves to new heights in our work.
Steve will help you plan better through efficient research to tips on choosing a location, booking and keeping costs down; what gear to bring and in which camera bag, airport tips, safety & security, staying healthy on the road and hiring a guide for a shortcut to great images. All this with tech tips to improve your response time and ideas for sharing your work in exciting and innovative ways from slideshows to print-on-demand books you can create in Lightroom. By the end of the week, students will have a reinvigorated passion for their work and a clear and focused plan of action.
Students should bring laptops with Adobe Lightroom.
