Class meets on 5 Wednesdays, Mar 27, Apr 3, 10, 17 & 24 from 10am-12:30pm ET.

Guided by award-winning photographer Lisa Elmaleh, whose work has been featured on CNN, New York Times and National Geographic, this class will provide direction and discourse on how to build a body of work. This is intended for students who are either looking to advance an existing portfolio or who would like to build a new portfolio from scratch.

For the first class, students will bring an idea for a body of work and a few images sketching it out. From there, we will discuss what makes their story unique, and how they can best fit their work to that vision.

In each class, students will have their images discussed and receive examples of other artwork or writing relevant to their journey. Over the five weeks, students will create artist statements with individualized feedback and learn how to best articulate their work.

The main focus of this class will be on making images that fit into a cohesive series. By the end of this course, students can expect to leave with a complete body of work, and the tools to continue on their journey.

Instructor: Lisa Elmaleh

Lisa Elmaleh is an American visual artist, educator, and documentarian based in Hampshire County, West Virginia. She specializes in large-format work in tintype, glass negative, and celluloid film. Since 2007, she has been traveling across the US documenting American landscapes, life, and culture.

Elmaleh's work has been exhibited nationwide and recognized by the Aaron Siskind Foundation, Puffin Foundation, The Tierney Foundation, amongst others. Her work has been published by Harper's Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, CNN, The New York Times, National Geographic, Oxford American, Garden & Gun, and NPR, amongst others.
