With step-by-step guidance from Joelle Webber, create a stab binding album that can be used to beautifully display your photographs & more.
An elegant album, using fine archival papers, which includes a layer of interleaving between each page. This hand bound book will protect a series of prints, images and other ephemera. Stitched together with the traditional stab or 4-hole binding, this simple design can be tailored to the size and number of items you would like to collect.
* To join in the step-by-step instruction, please collect all tools and materials before the workshop begins. See the lists below. Email with questions.
This daylong workshop is for those who want to display and protect their prints in book form. The Stab Binding Album is a great book structure to mount photographs, prints, collected ephemera, or single-page collages oriented vertically or horizontally.
In the morning, we will learn to cut down our archival materials by ‘measuring from the reality’ of your collected prints. This album is designed to add a collection of images that are protected with interleaving within the book. As we create, we will discuss different ways to organize our content within the book and begin to mount our images onto our pages.
In the afternoon, after an hour lunch break, we will finish shaping our pages and mounting our prints and interleaving, then bind our album pages into beautiful stab binding books. Completing the archival protection of your collection. A wonderfully rich presentation and a compelling comprehensive work of art.
Required Materials
- The collection of images you want to be mounted in the book.
- Double-sided mounting adhesive (https://www.talasonline.com/3M-415-Tape?quantity=1&size=40 – 1/4” thick is plenty).
- Text block (https://www.talasonline.com/Tiziano-Paper?quantity=5&number=821 – 5 sheets of the 27.5”x39”. Feel free to choose photographic or print papers you already have. I wouldn’t go any lighter on paperweight for this book).
- Interleaving (https://www.talasonline.com/Satin-Vellum-Paper – 5 sheets of Satin vellum paper. I tend to get the 30 lb, as it is less likely to dimple, leaving white marks. Feel free to use your preferred interleaving).
- Cover (https://www.talasonline.com/St-Armand-Colored-Papers – 1 sheet of a sturdy, but pliable cover weight paper, not stiff when folded).
- Binding (https://ribbonbazaar.com/willow-18-double-faced-satin-100yd – 1 yard of 1/8” satin ribbon. You can also look in your local fabric and craft stores or https://www.royalwoodltd.com/cat14-17ar.htm 1 yard of waxed linen thread. I tend to buy the 4-ply spools).
- PVA glue (https://www.talasonline.com/Jade-711).
