Letterpresses are versatile machines. In this week-long class we will explore various ways of creating images with the presses. Some include wood- or linocut printing techniques, as well as several printing techniques like pressure printing and monotypes.
Yotsume Toji or 4-hole binding is a common Japanese binding structure with a long history of use. Students will build their model in a traditional manner, while incorporating western tools and equipment to develop a better understanding of the structure. Students will explore ways of modifying the sewing pattern on their own before reconnecting for a Q&A session.
Combine text and image to create a beautiful artist’s book. In this hands-on practical workshop, you will learn how to combine text and image to create a beautiful hand-bound letterpress piece. Every day will include discussions of your work and hands on book binding and letterpress tutorials.
Students are requested to bring the content they would like to work with, written pieces and printed photographs/original artwork. There will be time for writing and workshopping/editing your pieces during the week, but no digital printing services will be available.
This is a class for artists who are keen to learn letterpress and how to put their words and images into the book form. No prior book binding or letterpress experience is required. Experience with Adobe Indesign is helpful but not essential.
