Join food photographer and photo kitchen studio owner Jenny Bravo for a fun and supportive week learning the ins and outs of food photography. We will spend time together both on-campus and on-site at the critically acclaimed restaurant, Nîna June. Students will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience working directly with the restaurant’s head chef, Sara Jenkins, as well as receive direct feedback or have any questions answered by Jenny.

This immersive and foodie-focused workshop is your opportunity to learn the world of food photography; from the art of food photos and finding your unique style, to immersive restaurant and studio photography, to editing for color, and business basics. After this 5-day intensive, you can expect to have a solid foundation in food photography with hands-on practice capturing food, atmospherics, and headshots in a restaurant setting, the basics of how to light a set, shoot tethered, and use props, composition, and editing to create a visually compelling photograph.

Additionally, the whole class will enjoy Thursday evening dinner at Nîna June (this is included in the course tuition and covers a meal, but does not cover alcohol). This is a great opportunity to enjoy the food we photographed as well as network, connect, and ask specific questions outside of class. 

Course Structure:

Monday – Introductions and the basics of food photography. Hands-on practice lighting a set versus sculpting natural light. Finding your style and how to stand out from the rest. Introduction to businesses.

Tuesday – Full-day restaurant immersive: capturing food and action.

Wednesday Morning – Restaurant immersive: capturing atmosphere and portraits.

Wednesday Afternoon – Studio photography for food brands. 

Thursday – Editing intensive. Post-production workflow. 

Friday – Critiques. The business of Food Photography.

Course Requirements:

While many skill levels are welcome to join us on this course for the senses, attendees must have a preliminary understanding of their camera used in manual mode and some experience editing in Adobe Lightroom.

Jenny Bravo is a food photographer and photo kitchen studio owner in Portland, Maine. Having started her career out of culinary school as a private chef, Jenny is passionate about creating simple and elegant food photos that let the dishes truly speak for themselves. Jenny is passionate about small business and championing creatives, and loves to use her skills as a professional photographer to help elevate the community around her. When Jenny is not behind her camera, she is working at her home decor store, Viand Mercantile.
