Class meets Saturdays 1pm-4pm ET

For editors, directors, and filmmakers who want to learn how to cut scenes and sequences that land with maximum impact.  Led by editor Mark Strand ACE (Shameless, Animal Kingdom, Nip/Tuck), you will journey into the dynamics and nuances of editing for story and character.

Through hands-on exercises, lecture, discussion, and analysis of scenes, students will explore how an editor engages with a project from the script stage all the way through delivering a cut.  Case studies from the instructor’s work will offer a real world view of the process.  We’ll examine how to cut to the needs of story, character, point-of-view, performance, and pacing.  You’ll learn how to analyze a script from an editor’s perspective and then how to adapt to the unique challenges (and surprises) of the film that emerges in the editing room.  The class will also look at how to effectively collaborate and communicate with the director, producer or show-runner, and the editorial and post-production team.

Using provided footage, students will work on building narrative scenes, while considering the motivation for each cut.  Rough edits will be critiqued in a constructive environment. The combination of hands-on experience, exploration of editing aesthetics, and the unique window afforded into real world dynamics of the craft will leave students with effective strategies for how to take their work to a new level.

Basic proficiency in non-linear editing software (preferably Avid Media Composer or Adobe Premiere Pro) is required and you should have the software installed.
