Erin Sweeney will be your guide for this lively and active weeklong workshop combining bookbinding, sculpture, and printmaking techniques all in one!
Erin is the chair of the Art Education department at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire as well as a book artist and sculptor. She is a generous and welcoming instructor who studied and worked with Hedi Kyle.
During the week, we will discuss the intersection of artists’ books, three-dimensionality, and surface design. We will explore the links between embroidery and simple bindings, artist’s books, and sculpture. We will also explore simple ways to print and embellish surfaces. Students will leave with many samples, finished pieces, and methods for continuing your practice.
Additionally, we will discuss ways to incorporate all of the things we learn this week into the curriculum, lesson planning, innovative assessment strategies for educators, and daily practices.
This course is ideal for anyone at any level:
Artists who want to break out of a rut and see things in a new light;
Educators who want to learn new skills, materials, and approaches to take back to the classroom (art or science);

Instructor: Erin Sweeney
Erin Sweeney lives and works in southern New Hampshire. She received her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she was awarded the Elizabeth C. Roberts Prize for Graduate Book Arts. She also has a BFA in Sculpture from the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine.
Sweeney exhibits nationally, most recently at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts and at the Museum of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. In 2019, Sweeney was awarded a Ruth and James Ewing Award for Excellence in the Arts, and in 2020 was a juror for the Awards.
Additionally, Sweeney is the Coordinator of the Art Education program at Plymouth State University. She teaches Art Education and studio courses; develops curriculum, and assessment strategies, and loves to talk about teaching! She also teaches workshops at her Lovely in the Home Press and travels to teach workshops.
