After 25 years as a Los Angeles/New York-based award-winning filmmaker and actor, Michael A. Nickles recently relocated to New England. His latest feature, HOLLY STAR, which he wrote, directed and produced in Maine will have its Netflix debut in the fall of 2019.
He has written and/or directed over a dozen feature films, including PLAYBACK (starring Christine Slater), JUST PECK (starring Academy Award winner Brie Larson), the animated feature BUNYAN AND BABE (starring John Goodman) and the award-winning festival favorite, THIS IS NOT A FILM. Michael is the Executive Producer of Heather Graham’s directorial debut, HALF MAGIC, and directed the international golf drama SWING AWAY. He also has extensive credits as an actor in features and television.
Michael began his career as a film student at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where he won the William Morris Screenwriting Award for his short film KILLIN’ TIME and later graduated with top honors after receiving the school’s most prestigious filmmaking award, the merit-based WTC Johnson Fellowship. He went on to study with director Cory Allen and legendary acting teacher Sanford Meisner. As a cinematographer, he has worked on numerous documentaries, including the cult classic HANDS ON A HARDBODY, which became a Broadway musical in 2012.
