Rockport is halfway down the Maine Coast – just off Route One. It is 90 miles north of Portland, between Camden and Rockland. You can find us on most maps. You can drive, fly, even sail into Rockport harbor – Rockport Marine 207.236.9651 can help you arrange a mooring for your boat. By car, Rockport is less than a two-hour drive from Portland, less than four hours from Boston, eight hours from New York and Montreal, and five hours from Quebec. Driving directions are included in your Acceptance Kit.

Driving Directions
Rockport is a 3.5 hour drive north from Boston; New York City and Montreal are 8 hours away. The drive through New England can be most enjoyable.

If you are coming from the South, take Interstate 95 north into Maine. Take the South Portland Exit (I-295) and follow I-295 through Portland. Continue on I-295 to the Brunswick Route 1 Exit (Exit 28). Follow Route 1 through Brunswick, Bath, Woolwich, Wiscasset, Damariscotta and Waldoboro to Warren – about 45 miles, where you’ll find Route 90 at a blinking yellow light. Take a left onto Route 90 and follow it 12 miles to the third set of stop lights. The Market Basket, a green barn, will be on your right. Turn LEFT onto Route 1 and then after 1/4 mile take a RIGHT onto Camden Street. Go through a STOP sign and Maine Media will be on your left before the hill.

If you are driving into Maine on a busy summer weekend, Route 1 may be crowded. Here is an alternate route we sometimes take: Driving north on Interstate 295, continue north, past the Brunswick exit, to the Route 201 exit, approximately 35 miles. Follow 201 East into Gardiner and drive through town and over the bridge – the second bridge. Turn RIGHT at the far end of the big bridge then the next available LEFT onto Route 226. Follow 226 for about ten miles to Route 17. Turn RIGHT and follow 17 for 30 miles to Route 90 in West Rockport. Turn LEFT and follow Route 90 for three miles to the second stop light. Turn LEFT onto Route 1 and then after 1/4 mile take a RIGHT onto Camden Street. Go through a STOP sign and the Workshops will be on your left before the hill. This alternate route adds about ten miles to the total distance, but can save half-an-hour’s driving in Maine’s summer traffic.

Maine Media accommodations include bed linens, blanket, pillow, bath towel, face cloths and bath mats. Accommodations are cleaned weekly by our housekeeping staff. Bed linens and towels are changed, bathrooms are cleaned, trash is removed from garbage containers, and bedroom and common areas are dusted and vacuumed. The housekeeping department will not pick up or move any personal items. If you bring your own linens, bedding or towels you will be responsible for their laundering. Be sure to keep them separate from Maine Media’s supply.

Housekeeping will not be responsible for misplaced linens, bedding or towels.

Due to lack of facilities, we cannot guarantee storage space. If you drive, you can use your vehicle for personal storage.

Everything at Maine Media is informal. In May, June and September, the days are apt to be cool, the evenings chilly and some days wet. Bring warm clothes, foul weather gear (a raincoat), good shoes for walking, a hat and sunglasses. In July and August, the weather is warm and often hot, so bring shorts and bathing suit for that nice dip in the local lake!

A professional and helpful attitude and appearance contributes to the positive impression we make on our students. This includes proper personal hygiene, clean clothing without holes, tears or patches, no cutoff jeans or clothing displaying profane or intimidating language. Staff is required to wear foot wear at all times while on campus. For staff working on film sets, in the sound stage or photo labs, housekeeping, maintenance department or in the kitchen, closed toed shoes are mandatory. (For further information see policy Employee Code of Conduct in the employee handbook.)

There are washers and dryers in the campus residence that are available for you to use. These are coin operated machines and a detergent vending machine available. (Laundry facility will not be available for use during the Academy program. There is a local laundry mat on Route 1 just before downtown Camden, in the Reny’s shopping plaza.)

While we strive to be an open and trusting group, we need to be aware that cameras, computers and other attractive gadgets can be a temptation for some. Keep your valuables out of sight and avoid keeping large amounts of cash in your room. Passports, tickets and small valuables may be kept in the business office. You are welcome to bring your bicycle and other sports equipment.

Unfortunately, Maine Media has no way of providing storage, security or insurance for these items. Bring them at your own risk. Maine Media is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen possessions.

Maine Media does not deter employees from bringing their pets to campus to visit, provided that the pet is not to be a nuisance, does not pose any health or safety issues, does not risk harming sensitive equipment, and that individuals working in the vicinity of the pet are comfortable with it. (Pet Policy)

No pets are allowed at any time in housing, classrooms or in and around the dining areas.

In order to keep our focus on students, guests of a staff member are encouraged to visit only on weekends or during time-off. Exceptions to this must be cleared beforehand with your supervisor.

Staff members returning from a prior season will need to complete all employment documents. You do not need to supply identification again unless expired within the past year.

If there any questions please contact the HR|Business Manager, Jane Richardson at jrichardson@mainemedia.edu.

In the United States, employees must prove their identity and verify that they are legally authorized to work in the county. They can do this by presenting their employer with certain documents. These documents are separated into three lists: List A, List B and List C.

If employees have one document under List A, that is sufficient proof of identification and authorization to work. Otherwise, employees must present two documents: one from List B AND one from List C. Note that employees need to present original documents, not copies. All documents must be current and up to date.

Here are the documents each list includes:

List A: These documents verify both identity and employment eligibility

  • Unexpired U.S. passport
  • Unexpired foreign passport (with an I-551 stamp)
  • Unexpired employment authorization card
  • Alien registration receipt card or permanent resident card
  • Unexpired employment authorization document containing a photograph (issued by USCIS)
  • Unexpired foreign passport (with form I-94, containing an endorsement of nonimmigrant status)

List B: These documents verify identity

  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver’s license or ID card that contains a photograph or description of personal characteristics
  • ID card issued by local, state or federal agencies with a photograph on it
  • Voter’s registration card
  • U.S. military card or draft record
  • Military dependent’s ID card
  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner card
  • A Native American tribal document

List C: These documents verify employment eligibility

  • Social security card
  • U.S. or birth abroad certificate
  • Native American tribal document
  • U.S. citizen ID card
  • Resident citizen ID card
  • Unexpired employment authorization document (issued by DHS)

Suggestions and tips to get ready and what to expect during a virtual interview.

Before the interview, make sure you have a reliable internet connection, a working camera and microphone, and a suitable software platform. You can ask the interviewer what platform they prefer, such as Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet, and download it in advance. Test your equipment and settings with a friend or family member, and check the sound and video quality. Also, have a backup plan in case of technical issues, such as a phone number or an alternative platform.

Find a quiet, well-lit, and professional-looking place to conduct your interview. Avoid distractions and interruptions from other people, pets, or noises. You can also use a virtual background or a plain wall to create a neutral and tidy backdrop. Make sure you have enough lighting in front of you, not behind you, to avoid shadows or glare. Adjust your camera angle and position so that you can look directly at the screen and maintain eye contact with the interviewer.

Even though you are not meeting in person, you still want to dress appropriately and professionally for your virtual interview. Choose an outfit that matches the company culture and the position you are applying for. Avoid wearing anything too flashy, revealing, or casual. Also, avoid wearing colors or patterns that might clash with your background or cause distractions. You can also do some research on the company’s website or social media to get a sense of their style and expectations.

As with any interview, you need to do some research on the company, the role, and the interviewer before your virtual meeting. You can use online sources, such as the company’s website, LinkedIn, or Glassdoor, to learn more about their mission, values, products, and culture. You can also prepare some questions to ask the interviewer to show your interest and enthusiasm. Additionally, you can practice your answers to some common interview questions, such as your strengths, weaknesses, achievements, and goals. You can use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses and provide specific examples.

One of the most important aspects of a virtual interview is to be punctual and polite. You should log in to the platform a few minutes before the scheduled time and wait for the interviewer to initiate the call. You should also greet the interviewer with a smile and a friendly tone, and introduce yourself briefly. During the interview, pay attention to the interviewer’s cues and body language, and avoid interrupting or talking over them. You should also thank them for their time and opportunity at the end of the interview, and follow up with a thank-you email within 24 hours.

Sometimes, you might encounter some challenges or difficulties during your virtual interview, such as technical glitches, background noises, or awkward silences. The key is to handle them calmly and professionally, and not let them ruin your confidence or performance. You can apologize for any inconvenience, ask for clarification or repetition if needed, and use humor or positive language to ease the tension. You can also show your problem-solving skills and adaptability by finding alternative solutions or ways to communicate.
