Suited to photographers wanting to shoot editorial stories or pursue journalistic projects, this 5- day workshop will show you how to find local stories to tell. You’ll learn to identify what makes a good story, determine the narrative, and interpret that visually. You don’t have to travel to the other side of the world to make interesting photos. The best photos can be made from what you know the most about: what’s right around you.
You’ll go through the process of photographing a story from start to finish. You’ll brainstorm, research, scout, and determine how to photograph a story for editorial purposes. You’ll spend time in critiques, and learn how to select your images and submit them to editors.
Students should have camera equipment they are comfortable with, a computer to edit on, and a reliable internet connection. Be ready to make photos!

Instructor: Sarah Rice
Sarah Rice (b.1982) is a documentary and editorial photographer based in Portland, Maine. Born in Michigan, she graduated with a BA in photojournalism from Central Michigan University. She’s lived and worked on both coasts and now calls her sixth state home. She’s particularly interested in long-term documentary projects that involve marginalized and outlier populations, and those that explore the ties that bind human beings to one another. Her clients include The Center for Investigative Reporting, CNN, Down East Magazine, Mother Jones, National Geographic, NBC News, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and Yankee Magazine.
