Peter Turnley, a legendary international photographer/photojournalist and teacher of street photography, is offering a one-week workshop focusing on helping students make authentic, spontaneous photographs of daily life in the spirit of the philosophy of the great French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, “The Decisive Moment”. This is an amazing opportunity to grow as a photographer in order to be able to make photographs that the poetry in the streets of daily life.
During the workshop, students learn to connect with magical moments of daily life and develop a camera technique and approach to photographing people and life that enables them to capture the richness of the authentic life of people wherever they are to be found. Turnley is a master of both photographing life and people and has photographed over 4 decades of amazing moments of the human condition worldwide. He works with students to overcome their timidity and anxiety around photographing people, offering time-tested tips and techniques both in human terms and camera technique. He helps students find their inner voice and connect with their passions and interests regarding the world around them. This workshop offers an amazing opportunity for students to make a large leap forward in their ability to photograph not only environments and landscapes but most importantly people and life. Peter Turnley’s workshops are most often amazing transformational experiences for students.
Turnley also works with students on photographing and editing a picture story and creating a visual narrative.
The workshop meets for approx. 3 hours each day for presentations, lectures, photo critiques, and reviews. Students are encouraged to spend the rest of each day during the workshop exploring and photographing the exciting visual life that exists in the towns, villages, farms, and ports of the wonderful region of Rockport, Maine. The workshop will also visit as a group during the week in Portland and Lewiston, Maine. These trips will be excellent opportunities for participants to learn to interact with people and make photographs and document life in some of America’s most ethnically diverse urban neighborhoods. Peter works with students to find themes of photographic interest and helps them develop a photo story/narrative of their week’s work. This is an excellent opportunity for students to work on developing their personal vision and style. The workshop ends with a final show with each student producing a 15-photograph picture story/essay that will be edited together with Peter the day before the workshop ends.
A 35mm lens is strongly recommended for this class.

Instructor: Peter Turnley
Peter Turnley is renowned for his photography of the realities of the human condition. His photographs have been featured on the cover of Newsweek forty-three times and are published frequently in many of the world’s most prestigious publications. He has worked in over ninety countries and has witnessed most major stories of international geopolitical and historic significance in the last forty years. He has produced portraits and covered many of the modern world’s most influential people: Obama, Castro, Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Putin, Mandela, Arafat, Schroeder, Ceausescu, Gaddafi, Chirac, Clinton, Reagan, Bush Sr., Lady Diana, and Pope Jean Paul II among others. His photographs have been exhibited worldwide, and recently in October 2019 he had a major exhibit in Havana, Cuba at La Fototeca de Cuba, “Paris-Cuba”. Turnley lives in both New York and Paris and has published seven books: Beijing Spring, Moments of Revolution, In Times of War and Peace, Parisians, McClellan Street, French Kiss: A Love Letter to Paris, and Cuba: A Grace of Spirit.
