Color has complex physical properties that painters have studied and utilized for centuries.  Learning these attributes, in addition to how color is affected by changing light, is imperative for any color photographer. The goal is to go beyond an arbitrary use of color and create strong images, which are directed by the emotional expression of color. Master this elusive, yet powerful artistic element.

Photographing each day in the beautiful environment of Maine, with the potential of a Fall leaf display, will offer the rich and subtle colors needed to paint the blank canvas of your image capture. Current topics and contemporary practices in color photography will be covered through lectures and discussions. 

Skill Level:

For any level photographer who has a firm technical grasp of their camera. 

Digital cameras preferred. Digital Participants should bring laptops to process and view images. Working knowledge of your camera and either Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop is required in order to prepare your images for projection and discussion. The course will be focused on the photographing and viewing the images.  Processing and printing images can be done after you land back home with your treasure trove of new photographs.

Instructor: Jo Whaley

Jo Whaley is a photographer with a MFA in painting from UC Berkeley. She has worked as a scenic artist for various theaters, including the San Francisco Opera and Ballet. Whaley has exhibited in the U.S., Europe & Japan, at institutions including the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the George Eastman House in Rochester. Her book “The Theater of Insects” accompanied a traveling exhibition that originated at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington DC and concluding at the Henry Fox Talbot Museum, UK. In 2019 she had a solo exhibit at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, where her photographs where paired with O’Keeffe Paintings.
