As fine art photographers, how do we develop, strengthen, and maintain our ability to conceive and craft constructed compositions with compelling emotional resonance? Whether assembling objects for a still life, constructing digital montages, or directing and shooting an ensemble of actors, together in this workshop we will uncover and explore the practical tools and long-term strategies necessary to achieve success on our quest to becoming more effective emotional messengers.
Over the course of the workshop, we will look at lots of photographs by poetic visual storytelling masters, both past and present. Learning by example, we will analyze their choices for lighting, composition, themes, and subject matter. We will discuss and explore specific techniques, based on both current brain research and time tested artistic practice, for generating ideas, and put into practice the aesthetic principles required for molding those ideas into dynamic visual statements. Students will have access to the Workshops’ photographic studio facilities throughout the week. The goal of the workshop will be for each participant to create a small cohesive suite of staged or constructed images, to be presented at the conclusion of the workshop. The workshop will also include a discussion of “best odds” strategies for navigating the world of competitions, portfolio reviews, and galleries. Throughout the workshop, Richard will be available for individual reviews and feedback.

Richard Tuschman began experimenting with digital imaging in the early 1990’s, developing a style that synthesized his interests in photography, painting and assemblage. His most recent series, Hopper Meditations, combines hand-built miniature dioramas seamlessly combined with real-life human models, inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper. His work has been exhibited internationally and recognized by, among others, Photo District News, Critical Mass Top Fifty, American Photography, Prix de la Photographie, Paris, LensCulture Exposure Awards, and the International Photography Awards. Commercially, his work has been featured in publications and advertisements for clients such as Adobe Systems, The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and Penguin Random House, among others.
