Class meets 2-5pm ET for four sessions (October 19th, 21st, 26th & 28th)
In this generative workshop, we’ll focus on a different fundamental aspect of poetry in each class:
- Various forms of repetition/pattern-making, and
Each class session we’ll move through a series of readings and writing exercises that hone in on one of these particular craft elements.
The goal for each of these sessions is to generate one full draft of a poem by the end, along with some ideas and notes for other potential poems.
For the last session, the instructor will be available for one-on-one meetings to offer feedback on participants’ poem drafts (these can be poems written during the workshop or other poems).
We’ll strive toward what poet Jericho Brown has called “the gorgeous and enduring thing.”

Chen Chen is the author of When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities, which won the A. Poulin Jr. Poetry Prize, Thom Gunn Award for Gay Poetry, and the GLCA New Writers Award. Longlisted for the National Book Award, When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities was also a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry, and was named one of the best of 2017 by The Brooklyn Rail, Entropy, Library Journal, and others.
