This class is geared toward anyone who wants to learn how to work on images in Adobe Photoshop. You don’t have to have any Photoshop experience. You will need to have the application installed on your computer and have launched the application. The class will meet for 4 sessions, for 2 hours. Please allow additional time in your schedule if the class gets interactive and goes over.

This is a Photoshop Soup-2-nuts, (2hr) lesson each session. Each class will break into approximately 3 x 15-20 min lessons (this is the watching part of the show and tell) – 3 x 15-20 min Demo/Do’s (this is where you launch the app and Follow along) with 1- 15 min Q/A and 1 break. Some of the sessions will focus on demonstration and definitions but there is always time for you to demonstrate what you have learned. Below is just a surface scratching of all the amazing facets of Adobe Photoshop we will cover.

Lesson 1: The Interface

Learn the vocabulary of the items on your screen, how to set Photoshop up for working as a photographer, and how to save any adjustments you might have set for easy recall by Photoshop. For example, if you’re left-handed you can set Photoshop upright (correctly) for you and backward for anyone else.

Items to cover:

  • Toolbar
  • Options Pallet – different options for every tool
  • Pallets
  • Layers
  • Docking pallets / Collapsing Pallets
  • Preview window
  • Setting preferences – Saving setups

Lesson 2: Tools you have to know

The toolbar is full of amazing tools that will let you do everything from editing portraits to creating items in 3D, but this lesson will define and demonstrate the tools most important to early editors in Photoshop.

  • Options Pallet – different options for every tool
  • The Toolbar:
    • The brush tool
    • Brush Pallets
      • Loading and saving
      • Key modifiers like the option key
    • Selections tools
      • Marquees – Elliptical selection tool (Opt, Shift, Control)
      • Lasso Tool ( normal, polygon, magnetic)
      • Magic Wand ( Magic, Object selection, quick deletion tool)

Lesson 3: Fixing Photos

Using the tools in Photoshop to rebuild simply too complex issues in photos from portrait to landscape.

  • Healing Brush
  • Spot Healing Brush
  • Patch tool
  • Content-aware tool
  • Red-eye tool
  • Clean stamp tool
  • Frequency separations lesson
    • Skin texture and color repair

Lesson 4: Terms and Definitions Agreement

This is so we all start on the same page and head in the same direction at every turn.

  • The stuff you have to know that is not so simple.
  • Color Spaces – Profiles
    • Adobe RGB / ProPhoto / sRGB / CMYK
  • What is Resolution DPI vs PPI 100
  • Blend modes – they are more than just for layers. Get to know the ones that matter
    • Multiple/Screen/difference/H-S-L-C
  • Actions – why do things the hard way if you can save time?
  • Q/A time – We will have a few minutes left in every class for questions and answers but this is when we get to all the questions you asked and said we’ll wait until the end and see if it all makes sense.
