After launching as the celebrated screenwriter of such classics as TAXI DRIVER and RAGING BULL, for four decades Paul Schrader has continued to be one of America’s most provocative filmmakers, writing and directing films like AMERICAN GIGOLO, MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS, CAT PEOPLE, AFFLICTION, LIGHT SLEEPER, and his recent film, FIRST REFORMED, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2019. His collaborations with Martin Scorsese also include THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST and BRINGING OUT THE DEAD.  His upcoming film, THE CARD COUNTER, stars Oscar Isaac, Willem Dafoe, Tye Sheridan, and Tiffany Haddish.

Referencing examples from his own work, Mr. Schrader will discuss his process for exploring story and character, and the power of using metaphor as a practical tool to help him discover the specific world of the narrative. While drawing on his own experience as a writer and director of acclaimed films, his exploration of dynamics relating to story and character will also resonate for novelists and writers of fiction working in other mediums. He will also reflect on how his early immersion in film history allowed him to investigate the medium and certain filmmakers in ways that would inspire and impact his future work as a writer and director.

Throughout his long career, Schrader has navigated Hollywood studios and the independent film world, embraced new technologies and processes, and has fought fiercely to bring his visions to the screen by any means necessary.

We are honored to present this iconic filmmaker as he discusses his career and his process.

This class is also part of the Film & TV Masters Series.
