Guided by veteran photography teacher Terry Abrams, you will build upon existing knowledge of Adobe Lightroom Classic and dive into Adobe Photoshop. The course begins with a review of the camera and Lightroom Classic essentials, then introduces the practice of combining images to create panoramic photographs, High Dynamic Range exposures, and focus-stacked images. These methods explore the digital techniques of extending the visual image frame and resolution, extending the dynamic range of the camera, and extending the depth of focus beyond what the aperture alone can achieve.

Course requirements

This course is a continuation of the Digital Photography I workshop and is suitable for anyone with a basic understanding of the camera and a basic knowledge of Adobe Lightroom software. You will learn new camera and tripod techniques such as making HDR exposures to extend the tonal range, creating panoramic images, and using focus stacking to increase depth of field. In Lightroom software, you will learn to work with global and local adjustments for creative emphasis, explore the creative potential of the development module and produce color-managed prints of various sizes. The course will have daily lectures/demonstrations as well as field trips to a variety of stunning coastal and town locations.

Class needs: Students are to bring a Digital SLR camera and Tripod or can borrow one for the week from Maine Media’s Digital Service Department. (A portable hard drive of at least 1TB will be required to take your new images and catalog home) This class is held in one of our digital classrooms, Macintosh computers will be provided.

Instructor: Terry Abrams

Terry Abrams has been teaching photography since 1975, when he moved to Europe to establish photography programs for an American college. He lived overseas for 13 years, during which time he taught and travelled extensively throughout Europe. Since 1990, Terry has been teaching photography full-time at Washtenaw Community College and led the transition of that program from film and darkroom to digital media.
