Join fine art and editorial photographer Alison Shaw for a week of photographing the coast of Maine, its beautiful harbors, coves, villages, islands, lighthouses, and gardens. This workshop is for amateur and professional photographers who want to discover their photographic style while building a body of personal images. It is a time when participants sharpen their technical skills and expand their abilities to see and make photographs in new and personal ways.

Alison works with students in the field as well as in the classroom exploring:

  • Acquiring technical skill
  • Developing a personal style
  • Practices to work more effectively in color
  • Abstract imagery
  • Improving compositions
  • Digital workflow
  • How to present fine art photos

Critiques are held every morning and students embark on field trips each afternoon. Alison offers guidance and support with both technical and aesthetic issues relevant to the photographer. This is a terrific opportunity for students to work with a highly regarded professional while improving their technique, developing their personal style of landscape photography, and acquiring a valuable set of tools for professional development. Students will meet on Saturday morning with the instructor for one-on-ones.

Course requirements

Students are required to work digitally and a laptop is required for image processing and editing.

Instructor: Alison Shaw

Alison Shaw is a fine art and editorial photographer who lives and works on Martha's Vineyard. For over 35 years the Island has provided the primary subject matter for her photography.  Alison has twenty books to her credit, including Vineyard Summer (Little Brown), Sticks and Stones (Gibbs Smith) and Schooner (Vineyard Stories), and is regularly published in major magazines. She has taught photography workshops worldwide and mentored hundreds of students. Alison is a 4-time recipient of the New England Press Association Photographer of the Year award for her photos which graced the pages of the Vineyard Gazette, where she also served as Director of Graphics and Design.
