It’s been said that a film is made three times – once in the writing, again in production, and, finally, in editing. At each point, the filmmakers need to see the film through new eyes and be alive to what it needs to become. Whether you’re an editor or director or writer, you need to understand the alchemy that can happen in the editing room.

Not least because some films have been entirely reinvented there. Christopher Tellefsen, ACE, has edited hits like “A Quiet Place,” “Moneyball”, “Assassin’s Creed”, “Capote”, “M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village”, “Analyze This”, “Man on the Moon”, and “The People vs. Larry Flynt.” He has also cut legendary independent films like “Kids,” “Gummo” and “Metropolitan.” He understands the dynamics of editing for many genres. But, no matter the genre, it’s all about story and character.  How do you make the unexpected choice that can amplify the emotional impact of a scene?

How do you shape a film’s through-line and momentum? When do you make the hard call to delete a scene? How do you diagnose the problem when a film’s not working? How do you fix it?

Through lecture, discussion, and viewing scenes, the Oscar-nominated editor will shed new light on his art and technique.  He’ll discuss how he approaches a project, collaborating with a director, and share examples that illuminate different challenges and the solutions that helped those scenes land with impact.

He will also examine the unique case of “A Quiet Place,” and what it was like to edit a film that is driven almost entirely by visual storytelling and sound design. Deepen your understanding of the editor’s art.

This class is also part of the Film & TV Masters Series.
