Journey inward using photographic images as prompts for contemplation and writing.

“By all means use sometimes to be alone, salute thyself. See what thy soul doth wear, dare to look in thy chest; for ’tis thy own: and tumble up and down what thou find’s there.” -Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau went to the woods in order to live “more deliberately”. This workshop salutes the 200th anniversary of his birth with a nod to his approach of emptying oneself of the commotion of the world and reconnecting with our authentic voice. A rich currency pulses in the images we see and those we make – lyrics unspoken. In this weekend immersion, participants are invited to gather up some of their own photographs to share, and join Author and Photographer Susan Currie for a journey inward using these and other photographic images as prompts for creative writing. Embracing the renewal of springtime, a series of deliberate exercises will help to still the mind and move beyond obstacles which may be stalling the flow of your writing. Guided meditations will incorporate the natural world, purposeful study of the myriad possibilities for combining words and images, white space for journaling beauty, and group discussion. A perfect immersion for writers and photographers of all levels. This springtime, “Salute thyself”…
Winter/Spring lodging and meal package available for $475 per week. Includes breakfast and lunch Monday – Friday. Dinner services are not available during our Winter/Spring session. Meal plan (mandatory) without lodging is $125 per week.
“Not having written poetry for decades, I felt drawn to take Susan’s workshop. It was just what I needed. I was beginning to see how words expanded my images, and how my images took words to places words alone could not go. My work took off in exciting new directions. Susan’s insights, exercises, knowledge as a writer and photographer herself, make the whole experience something I will always treasure. She creates a wonderfully enriching environment that truly nurtures growth and personal vision.” – Former student, Photography Instructor at St. Paul’s Academy.
“I have known Susan Currie for a decade now, and have enjoyed watching her journey to be more present daily, and more creatively alive. She has gradually moved from a career as a successful photographer and yoga instructor, to expressing herself through poetry. Now SUSAN is speaking in her own voice, and combining these words with her photographs. In doing so, she opens new doorways for others to use images and words together in their own journals or notebooks.” – Joyce Tenneson, photographer and author of the bestseller Wise Women.
