Faculty:

Instructor: Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, AMC

Rodrigo Prieto is a three-time Oscar nominee and one of the most acclaimed and respected cinematographers working today.  A frequent collaborator of directors like Martin Scorsese, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Oliver Stone, and Ang Lee, he is known for his meticulous setups, unconventional camerawork, rich use of color, and creating a moving, visceral experience for the audience. His many credits include THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, THE IRISHMAN, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, AMORES PERROS, BABEL, 21 GRAMS, BIUTIFUL, SILENCE, ARGO, LUST, CAUTION, JULIE TAYMOR’S A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, PASSENGERS, WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS, 8 MILE, FRIDA, WE BOUGHT A ZOO, STATE OF PLAY, 25th HOUR, ALEXANDER, VINYL, and most recently THE GLORIAS. He has also shot music videos for Taylor Swift, Jay-Z and Lana Del Rey. His many awards and nominations include three Oscar nominations for his work on THE IRISHMAN, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, and SILENCE.  He has also been recognized by Independent Spirit Awards, BAFTA Awards, Online Film Critics Society Awards, and American Society of Cinematographers Awards. While passionate about his work as a cinematographer, Rodrigo directed his first short film, LIKENESS, starring Elle Fanning, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013. Rodrigo is a distinguished alumnus of Maine Media Workshops.

Instructor: Steve Yedlin ASC

Steve Yedlin’s credits include several films with director Rian Johnson: KNIVES OUT, STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI, LOOPER, BRICK (Sundance Special Grand Jury Prize Winner) and THE BROTHERS BLOOM. Steve’s other cinematography credits include SAN ANDREAS, GIRL MOST LIKELY, DANNY COLLINS, CARRIE, AMERICAN VIOLET, Tobe Hooper’s THE TOOLBOX MURDERS, and THE WITNESS: FROM THE BALCONY OF RM. 306 (HBO, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short). He has lensed music videos for LCD Soundsystem and Son Lux.  His commercials include ones for Nike, Google, Sun Life, Mountain Dew, Rhapsody, and Microsoft. Steve’s passions and curiosity are focused on the art and science of motion imaging and photographic lighting. From the broadest emotional scope of visual storytelling to the narrowest mathematical granularity of image science, Yedlin’s obsession is not exclusionary. A long-time friend and collaborator of writer/director Rian Johnson, the two filmmakers’ work together began when both were teenagers with the making of homemade short films with unlikely titles such as THESAURUS THIEF and HEY LADY, YOU DROPPED YOUR WALLET, and has evolved today to include their highly regarded, if no less singular, feature films. When he’s not working with Johnson, Yedlin enjoys exploring the flexibility of his craft with a variety of directors and projects. His range of work has managed to include intense indie dramas, Hollywood visual effects spectacles, comedies (both broad and dark), horror films, and the occasional documentary.

Instructor: Checco Varese, ASC

Checco Varese, ASC lensed It: Chapter Two for director Andy Muschietti, the highly anticipated sequel to 2017’s box office success, and the CW’s Jane the Novela pilot, a spinoff of their hit Jane the Virgin series. Previously, he shot several episodes of the first season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan for Amazon with John Krasinski starring in the titular role; the pilot for Fox’s legal drama Proven Innocent; and director Jeffrey Nachmanoff’s sci-fi thriller, Replicas, featuring Keanu Reeves and Thomas Middleditch. Thanks to his prolific body of work, Varese has established a reputation as the unofficial ‘pilot guy.’ He has lensed nearly two dozen season starters which, more often than not, go on to be picked up to series: FX’s The Strain; A&E’s The Returned; ABC Family’s The Fosters; Melrose Place for the CW; and The Defenders for CBS. And who can forget the True Blood pilot? This iconic series went on for seven seasons.
