This 1-day workshop is for cinematographers, video professionals, and freelance filmmakers who want to engage in a dynamic discussion about lighting and learn about lighting techniques and styles used in feature films, commercials, and episodic television. Through lectures and discussions, the class covers the importance of lighting design in visual storytelling, and the processes and industry practices used to execute a wide range of lighting set-ups.In addition to discussing aesthetics, we will touch upon the practical use of industry-standard lighting technology, including LED, HMI, tungsten, fluorescent, and more. We will discuss working as a crew, and the roles of DP, Gaffer, G&E, and more.

Instructor: Justyn T Davis

Justyn T Davis is an award-winning Lighting Designer and Union Gaffer. Since 2017 he has guest lectured and taught at NYU Tisch Graduate School. He is calm, patient, and enthusiastic about filmmaking.

His Gaffer credits include The Last O.G., The Central Park Five, Ode to Joy, and many more films and episodic series. His credits as Bestboy Electric and Electrician include Blackkklansman, The Informer,  Quantico, and much more.

Justyn is also an experienced lighting designer who has worked on a wide variety of projects. Some of his lighting designer credits include Nick Offerman: American Ham, Super Bowl LII, as well as The Food Network's BBQ Blitz and Brunch @ Bobby's.

Justyn recently won an Emmy for his work as Lighting Director on the Super Bowl Pregame Show. He also teaches and lectures at Harvard University, SVA, and Maine Media Workshops.
