Professional Certificate in Visual Storytelling – What to Bring
You will need a 35mm DSLR camera with manual over-ride controls for focus, f-stop and shutter speed. The school does have digital cameras from Canon available for student checkout. A tripod is highly recommended.
Specific course needs are below:
19th Century History of Photography
A Cultural History of Photography by Maria Warner Marion (3rd or 4th edition)
Digital Techniques
Memory Cards-16GB minimum
500GB Firewire-800 Hard Drive. (OWC or LaCie brand recommended)*
250 sheet box of 8.5 x 11 paper Epson Luster
Paper Pencils, pens and Sharpie markers
Spiral notebooks and 3-ring binders for notes, and print tests
1-full set of Epson SureColor P600 ink is included in the lab fee, students are responsible for additional inks
Boxes to store prints (grey Hollinger boxes are recommended)
Additional papers will be needed during the term for paper tests, and final printing
Collaborations in Multimedia
Video: DSLR able to shoot video at 24 and 30 frames per second such as the Canon 5D Mark 2 or 3. Ability to control camera manually in video mode (some Nikon’s will not allow this). (cameras are available for student check out from the Digital Service Department)
Headphones: Sennheiser HD 203 Around-Ear Stereo Headphones or Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphone
Hard drive: 1TB – 2TB hard drive (with USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt connection)* * a second drive is recommended for a mirror back up
Memory cards: 16GB or larger, up to 64GB recommended for video. NOTE: Video Cards-Must comply with the write-speed of specific camera for video and generally Class 10 will work with most DSLR cameras shooting in video mode.
Audio Recorder: such as a Zoom H4N or Zoom H6N (These may be purchased after students have arrived for classes.)
Optional: A video capable tri-pod such as Magnus VT-3000 Tripod With Fluid Head (these can also be checked out from the tech barn upon arrival).
Considerations
These are starter lists. Students may find they wish to purchase additional gear, and may need additional hard drives, memory cards, batteries, paper, inks and other related course materials during the semester.
Electives and other courses may require text books or additional basic materials, which will be outlined in course syllabi.
All students should bring samples of their current work for review and for continued work.
