Maine Media is pleased to announce that Bobby Lee is the 2024 Book Artist in Residence.

Bobby is a recent graduate of the Master of Fine Arts program at University of Nevada-Reno. Bobby describes his work as, “Coming from a landscape photography background, my photographic process focuses on the sense-based experience of being in and interacting with the physical world. I use photography, book arts, and paper as material to explore ideas around human relationships to landscape and nature. Reflecting on the colonial legacy of the history of landscape photography and extractive Land Art that idealizes and separates nature from humans, I seek to expand my photographic language beyond traditional representations of landscape to recognize my indebtedness to land and its history. Combining photography with book arts and paper sculpture provides unique avenues to display photography in different layered and interactive ways.”

Bobby Lee has recently exhibited his work at:

  • 2024 Un/Altered Rock, Student Gallery South, Reno, NV (MFA Thesis Exhibition)
  • 2024 Chromascapes, Donna Beam Gallery, Las Vegas, NV (Group Exhibition)
  • 2023 Westward Bound II, Spark Gallery, Denver, CO (Group Exhibition)
  • 2023 PhotoBookWorks 2023, Spark Gallery, Denver, CO (Group Exhibition)
  • 2023 Emplacement/Displacement, Sierra Arts Foundation, Reno, NV (Solo Exhibition)

His process for this project involved backpacking trips into the wilderness to explore all sides of one Sierra Nevada basin. He followed a particular band of gray rock that stretched across the canyon as a way to emphasize the deeper geologic story of the landscape. In creating the artist book, he will use an accordion structure with sewn-in pages to include different types of imagery and media along with text to guide the viewer through the experience.

Maine Media is looking forward to hosting Bobby Lee in the Charles Altschul Book Arts Studio from March 15 to April 12, 2025. Learn more about Maine Media’s Online and On-Campus Book Arts program.
