Joanne is a lifelong writer and a social worker and psychologist by training. She earned an MSW, MA (Psychology) and PhD (Social Work & Psychology) from the University of Michigan, and an MFA from the University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast Creative Writing Program (fiction concentration). She has postgraduate certificates in family therapy, the Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) Workshop Method, Life Legacies, and has completed advanced legacy training on immigration and exile.
Joanne has numerous academic, fiction and nonfiction publications, including online courses and co-authorship of the 2005 book To Do No Harm. She is Executive Director Emerita of the National Patient Safety Foundation, a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Maine, a member of the Author’s Guild, and Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance. She serves on the membership committee of Sage-ing International. In 2012, she formed Your Write Mind, a community committed to creating safe spaces where all writers, regardless of experience, are empowered to discover their authentic creative voice.
