Maine Media Gallery is pleased to announce The Door Between featuring work by Valerie Carrigan, Tillman Crane, Susan Davens, Brenton Hamilton, Jeannie Hutchins, Sal Taylor Kydd, Nancy Loeber, Jim Nickelson, Jason Philbrook, Anneli Skaar, Richard Reitz Smith, Alan Vlach, and Deanna Whitman. The exhibition will be on view from August 14-October 6.  An Opening Reception will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 5-6:30pm.

The Door Between features work with an emphasis on the handmade. In this digital age, images are immediate and ubiquitous--we are constantly bombarded with visual information. Both book arts and historic process photography celebrate a return to the handmade. All of the work in this exhibition bears marks of the artist’s hand, and is as much about the process of making it as about the finished work itself. The Door Between spans a wide range of subject matter, artistic sensibilities, and personal visual taste, but is united by the handmade nature of the medium.

Carrigan, Loeber, Skaar, and Smith have all been Book Artists in Residence at Maine Media Workshops, which is an opportunity for emerging and practicing book artists, letterpress printers, and photographers combining word and image. It is designed to help the chosen artist complete their proposed project by providing studio space, funding, housing, and the support of a curious, interdisciplinary arts community. Visit https://www.mainemedia.edu/artistinresidence for more information about the book artist in residency program.

Join us for a talk with photographer, Jim Nickelson at The Rockport Opera House –– Monday, August 21st, 7:30PM.

Jim Nickelson is a photographer whose work is driven by a sense of wonder of the natural world and its underlying science. Science is thus the underpinning for all of his photography, whether it be work based on the concept of the passage of time, work motivated by natural rhythms and cycles and patterns, work exploring the mysteries of nature, or work simply inspired by the wonder of the natural world.

Jim works full time as a fine art photographer and custom digital printer (as Nickelson Editions) and teaches workshops on photography and digital printing both privately and through Maine Media Workshops. Before committing himself to the photographic life, he pursued the classic artistic career path of NASA engineer and corporate lawyer. Jim makes his home in Camden, Maine, with his amazing wife and daughter.

Jim has received numerous awards, including being honored as Artist-in-Residence at Acadia National Park and Arizona's Chiricahua National Monument. Jim has also exhibited widely, including in museums or galleries such as the Photo Resource Center at Boston University (Boston, MA), Danforth Museum of Art (Framingham, MA), Center for Maine Contemporary Art (Rockport, ME), University of Maine Museum of Art (Bangor, ME), Michener Art Museum (Doylestown, PA), Bates College Museum of Art (Lewiston, ME), Three Columns Gallery at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA), University of Wyoming Art Museum (Laramie, WY), 555 Gallery (Boston, MA), VoxPhotographs (Portland, ME), Davis Orton Gallery (Hudson, NY), Center for Photographic Art (Carmel, CA), Preston Contemporary Art Center (Mesilla, NM), Spiva Center for the Arts (Joplin, MO), New York Center for Photographic Art (NYC), Ten High Street Gallery (Camden, ME), Kingman Gallery (Deer Isle, ME), Gallery Photographica (San Francisco, CA), and Silvermine Guild Galleries (New Canaan, CT).

Jim's work resides in museum, public, corporate, and private collections across the United States and Canada.
