Description

The responsibilities of this position are carried out under the guidance of the Vice President of Academic Affairs. This position offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a gallery setting. This position will serve as the primary point person for the Maine Media Gallery in Rockport. The Rockport Gallery displays regular exhibitions and hosts Tim Whelan’s renowned collection of photographic books, serving as a valuable resource and gathering spot for the Maine Media summer community.

Responsibilities include installation of exhibitions, participating in curatorial decisions, organizing events such as opening receptions, artist talks and book signings. The Gallery Assistant maintains regular gallery hours and will greet and assist gallery visitors, share a working knowledge of exhibitions on view, run the register, track inventory and help with general upkeep of the gallery space.

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently are necessary to thrive in this position. Strong candidates will have an interest in pursuing a career in gallery management, curatorial and/or arts management work and a passion for the arts.

Basic Qualifications and Criteria:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in arts-related field (hold or currently pursuing one)
  • Passion for media arts and public arts programming
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to multitask effectively
  • Experience with art handling and exhibit installation
  • Photoshop/Lightroom/InDesign software experience is necessary
  • Detail oriented
  • Highly organized
  • A vehicle is necessary in this position

Gallery Assistant Experience

The Gallery Assistant oversees all aspects of operating the Rockport Gallery, including communication with artists, handling and inventory of artwork, publicity, exhibition installation, artists talks, book signings and gallery visits. The Gallery Assistant should have excellent communication skills, and ability to work independently.
