To ensure that everyone registering for a specific class shares the same technical and aesthetic level, we need to see a selection of your work. If you are a member of ASMP, APA or NPPA there is no need to submit a portfolio, but please state your organization affiliation on your application and include a written resumé.
Alternate Courses
If, in our opinion, your portfolio does not meet the standards set for a particular workshop, we will call or write you with suggestions for other workshops that might help you meet your goals. Photographers whose applications are received after a workshop is full will also receive a call from us to discuss possible alternatives. We suggest you have alternative courses in mind when preparing your application.
Submitting a Portfolio
Sending in a portfolio is simple. If your work is B&W prints include ten good inspection or work prints and six contact sheets. The prints tell us about your printing ability and your vision. Your contact sheets tell us how you handle a subject from frame to frame, if your exposures are consistent, and how you approach a subject. Prints must not be mounted, matted or framed, and should be sent as compactly as possible. A sturdy cardboard envelope works well, or a compact portfolio case. Large boxes and crates are difficult for us to handle. Send exhibition-quality prints only if you can accept the possibility of damage or loss in transit and handling. If you work in color, we need to see 40 slides. Edit tightly, and do not include variations of the same scene. Do not send original slides, as they are uninsurable and we can take no responsibility for them. Send originals only if you can afford the risk of their loss or damage. Present your slides in 20-slide plastic pages. Pack your work between two sheets of stout cardboard and ship in a reusable envelope, or include a return envelope within.
Digital portfolios are also acceptable, provided the class is not a traditional wet darkroom class. Submissions may be made either on CD, DVD or we can view a website.
Each print or slide must have your name and address written on it. A self-addressed label must also be included, along with sufficient postage if you wish the work returned. We will hold your work here, pending your arrival, if postage is not included. Receipt of your work will be acknowledged if you include a self-addressed, stamped postcard. Your work will receive professional care and respect, but we cannot be held legally responsible for its loss or damage.
We cannot recommend the U.S. mail for sending photographs. Federal Express is best, UPS is next. Include a check for return shipping.
What to Include
It is your personal work we wish to see. You can include your professional or commercial work as well, but it is your personal work, which tells us more about your vision.
