Book publishing for photographers has exploded over the last few years. Increased options for printing has enabled artists to consider publishing their own books, through both traditional and handmade processes. While most of the focus on self publishing has centered on print-on-demand services, creating an artist book offers a much wider array of control, materials, bindings, artistic expression, exhibition opportunities, and even income, making it an attractive option for expanding your storytelling capabilities.
This workshop will provide specific instruction and resources for photographers looking to self publish an artist book. By viewing sample books and case studies, evaluating student work, and in-depth presentation of the steps required to complete their book, participants will leave with the inspiration, tools, skills, and resources needed to finish their project. All workshop materials will be presented as general topics, but also within the context of Henkin’s own experiences in self-publishing.
Topics covered will include:
• Why self publish?
• Advantages and challenges of self publishing
• Evaluating your work
• How to finance your book
• Types of publication
• Determining specifications for your project
• Editing and sequencing
• Graphic design considerations
• Collaborating with other artists
• How to market & distribute your book
• Finding collectors
• Case studies
• Resources
Students should bring a body of work they would like to self publish.
