Judd Pilossof is recognized as one of the leading food/still-life photographers in the United States. Based in New York, Judd has shot for virtually all the major advertising agencies and food magazines. Some of his clients include Starbucks, Campbell's, Domino's Pizza, Stouffers and Healthy Choice. Judd's work is constantly being inspired by his love for cooking, wine and travel and this has translated into a unique style of lighting and personal development. This will be Judd's 16th summer here at The Workshops.
Lighting Techniques for Food & Still Life
This workshop is an opportunity to work closely with one of today's leading food and still life photographers. Lighting, composition, color, lens choice, propping, and the use of texture are the tools for the week. Lighting is one of the essential components to any professional photographer's creative process. Whether shooting for Fortune 500 companies, or blogging a personal journey, this workshop helps develop students' personal vision.
Students work in teams and alone in the studio, as well as on location to complete afternoon and evening assignments, beginning with basic lighting for simple conceptual ideas, then progressing into complex still lifes. This week is an opportunity to build images for portfolios and to fail, as mistakes lead to greater learning. Students are pushed and asked to stretch their work, which results in honest and in-depth critique.
Judd provides students with a solid foundation of studio tabletop techniques, including working with natural light, as well as studio strobe lighting. Students learn to use the extensive lighting equipment available in the workshop studio. Various techniques are demonstrated each morning, followed by individual assignments to be critiqued later.
Participants are invited to a local restaurant to shoot a travel and food story as one of their assignments. The chef prepares food from the restaurant to be photographed. Also, a guest food stylist spends a few hours demonstrating some techniques that can be used by each student.
Medium format or 35mm digital cameras are all welcomed. Students are encouraged to bring a laptop for image processing.
