Focus on Flowers

Explore the beauty of floral close-up photography in the field

Allen RockahDiscover and capture the amazing and beautiful miniature world found through floral macro photography.

Photographing close-ups of flowers is both fascinating and endlessly challenging. In this week-long workshop for intermediate and advanced students using digital cameras, Allen Rokach shares his expertise and long experience creating floral close-ups in the field.

Through a series of classroom presentations, critiques, discussions and on-location outings to fields and meadows along the Maine coast, students develop a personal vision and the macro-photography skills to achieve that vision. Throughout the week, students work on pre-visualization and explore creative approaches to shooting floral close-ups, while simultaneously learning and practicing specific camera techniques that help us make the images we envision and solve the problems we meet as we shoot outdoors.

Topics include choosing the appropriate macro lens, extension tube or close up filter; controlling sharpness in the subject and background; working with natural light throughout the day and in any weather; using small electronic flash units for fill light or special effects; achieving strong design with color and composition; working with after-capture techniques to maximize or transform your images.

A laptop with editing software is strongly suggested for this workshop.

Testimonials:

"My photographic vision improved by the hour and day. Simply a wonderful immersion."

"The excellent locations for shooting images were crucial. Local people who kindly opened their gardens to us, or let us tramp through their fields of wildflowers should know we are very appreciative."
