Developing the Narrative Project
This workshop focuses on creating a narrative project, from start to finish and delivering a coherent visual message. The techniques taught here are effective for both print and online media, from stories for magazines like National Geographic to non-profit web projects.
Karen and Bill demystify the process of researching and presenting editorial concepts to funding sources, as well as managing and executing a major project from conception to final presentation. From developing research to trend-spotting skills, the material covered in this course applies to both print and multimedia projects.
Throughout the week, attendees practice classroom teachings in the field. Participants propose, develop, photograph and edit a short journalistic picture story. This full-circle process guides students through the storytelling process in a series of manageable steps.
Working with two instructors whose combined experience in the field has produced dozens of major stories for magazines like National Geographic and Smithsonian, books for universities, and media projects for NGOs, this workshop provides participants with insights from the viewpoints of both photographer and editor. The week’s work results in the ability to shape, present and execute ideas in a cohesive visual narrative.
This course is designed for working professionals, serious non-professionals or post –graduate students interested in developing an in-depth visual narrative.
