Every major feature film has a still photographer on set creating images for editorial and advertising promotion. A job requiring collaboration with sensitive artists, powerful producers and demanding studios, while hampered by the technically restrictive environment of a film set make it a challenging profession.

Competition, limited clients, few locations for opportunity and union requirements make it a tough career to break into. This week we will explore the world of feature film still photography as a career. Through lectures, demonstrations and actual photography on fellow student's film sets, you will gain the knowledge and practical experience required of the still photographer in motion pictures. Kerry covers set etiquette and procedures, equipment, and especially the attitudes necessary to work creatively on the film set. He discuss the business, ways to break-in, union requirements, studio and editorial needs, working with crews and dealing with ego problems, including your own. Daily assignments have students working on a film set at the Film School here.

Students photograph scenes, the actors and crews, and, most importantly, those moments which capture the essence of the script, insight into a character or the film makers at work. Participants leave with new images for their portfolio and a good idea of the requirements necessary to work professionally on a motion picture set. Set photography is now a digital medium.

Students are to bring digital SLR equipment and a basic knowledge of digital technology.
