Gain a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between design and content to depict subjects with advanced artistry.

Norman Mauskopf

Photographers interested in learning how to create b&w or color images combining strong elements of both content and design should consider joining Norman for a week in beautiful mid-coast Maine. Students concentrate on developing both visual and technical skills as well as how to utilize these skills while working in various environments and lighting conditions. Class begins with a study of relevant themes throughout the history of photography, investigating how the design and composition of a photograph support the interpretation of the content. Discussions also include how a working method can affect and control the overall image. Students practice how to prepare for a shot in the field. By the end of the week students are able to photograph people and events in complex three-dimensional scenes, where various picture planes relate to the composition of the photograph as a whole. Daily assignments are geared to provide participants with an intensive working experience incorporating the fundamental elements of good design. Frequent critiques of student work in progress are held in combination with slide lectures concerning formal problems for the photographer and how these have been resolved by others.
