Grant funded projects are a dream come true for any photographer. In that dream, photographers get to go wherever they want, to create whatever pictures they want for any purpose they want. The reality is often very different and understanding the difference is the key to getting grant funding to support photographic projects. This workshop focuses on specific strategies in pursuing grants such as partnering with non-profit groups; important resources available on-line; and presenting work to potential funders.

Attendees gain a better understanding of the world of grants for funding photographic projects, and they get information on important on-line resources to assist in grant searches and funding for future projects.

Students learn to write a proposal for a photo essay - the first step toward funding, exhibiting, and publishing a project. David shares proposal examples that have earned him exhibits, publications, and grants. After an introduction to the mechanics of the photo essay, participants produce a photo essay (or part of a larger photo essay to be completed after the class.)  Finally, students learn how to establish a market for photo essays by researching what types of publications, museums, and organizations might use imagery and how to work with these businesses throughout the entire shooting, editing, and publication/exhibition process.
