Capturing Summer Light

Summer in Maine can bring sunshine, fog, or storm light! Join Brenda in exploring the different moods of light while photographing the coast, harbors, forests and gardens of the Workshops’ surrounding area.
Through visual presentations, Brenda discusses light, composition, design, creative expression and other useful tools for the creation of dynamic photographs. Additional topics such as fill flash, graduated filters, and software applications for creative effects are covered throughout the class.
During field and classroom time, the class explores working with available light, incorporating advanced composition and perspective, mastering technical skills, applying visual design, using color for impact, developing a personal style and digital workflow considerations. Brenda also shares methods for interpreting subjects artistically and capturing their essence.
Students apply these new techniques and ideas to their photography while exploring picturesque villages, harbors, beaches, forests, meadows and streams. Field trips, assignments, and critiques allow students to apply the material covered to create photographs with impact. Brenda reviews student work and individual goals at the beginning of the week, with critiques that are held each morning to address new challenges from each assignment. Mornings and afternoons are spent applying new ideas and techniques during group and solo field trips with morning and afternoon light. Midday is reserved for reviewing new images.
This workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced photographers with a working knowledge of the essentials: depth of field, exposure control, and basic digital workflow, as these will not be covered in depth in the class. Students work digitally.
