Learn how to photograph a travel story assignment with the Photo Editor of National Geographic Traveler.

In this workshop participants receive an assignment after portfolios are reviewed and story ideas are discussed. Â In one week participants shoot, edit, and layout a picture story with the guidance from one the top Picture Editors in the field. Field assignments are made each day, helping workshoppers understand the step-by-step process of how a photographer and picture editor work to produce a story for any travel publication. Critique and evaluations not only the photographs, but also the approach, research, points of view and the visual ideas brought to each participants story. Â During lectures, slide shows, and discussions, the destination story, personal expedition, personal profile, caption writing, proposals, research and picture editing are covered. Participants get an inside look at how magazine assignments are made and what magazine editors look for in stories and photographs. Â From recent trends and markets to how to pitch stock or assignment ideas, this course encompasses all aspects of being and becoming a travel photographer. By the end of the week participants know how to develop an idea, approach an editor, gain access, prepare for a trip and produce a publishable body of images. Digital is encouraged, but all formats are accepted. A portfolio submission is required for this course.
