Multimedia with Olympus Ultra-Portable Cameras

Aug 22 - Aug 28

Develop, shoot and edit dynamic multimedia projects using all-in-one ultra-portable cameras

Jay KinghornFor years, small all-in-one cameras have had the stigma of being for the casual photographer or videographer. But recently new breeds of ultra-portables, notably the Olympus PEN E-P1 and E-P2, have complicated that perception. Armed with interchangeable lenses, stunning optics and many megapixels of resolution, these small cameras are now viable options for amateurs and professionals alike.

One of the main advantages of this new breed of camera is its size. For multimedia documentarians, the possibility of having a camera that captures high quality stills, video and audio all within a package that can fit into a pocket, is highly attractive. This course, taught by Olympus Visionary Jay Kinghorn, explores the potential of these small cameras to create high quality multimedia projects. To this end, students find, shoot and produce short multimedia documentaries within the local community. Additionally, Kinghorn provides daily lectures, demonstrations and critiques as a means to better students’ storytelling skills within each medium of multimedia.

This workshop is not a beginner’s level course. Students should have a strong understanding of digital photography and workflow. Additionally, students need an understanding of Final Cut Pro before attending. Students may bring their own point and shoot or ultra-portable cameras of any make as long as they can capture stills and video.

Olympus generously provides the PEN series of camera for this workshop, and students are free to use them for the week.
