The demand for individuals with the skills and knowledge required for film and video production continues to grow. This hands-on workshop is for new filmmakers, film students, graduates and those who have yet to make their first film or work professionally in the field. In this 6 week program, students each produce their own short film, with their classmates rotating as their crew members, using professional tools and processes.
Students learn the process of film production, from the implementation of an idea through preproduction, production, and post-production. The theory of story structure, visual storytelling, and cinematic language are taught and emphasized. There are lectures, critiques, screenings and discussions of technical, procedural, aesthetic and ethical issues, as well as demonstrations, exercises, and group projects in the field and studio. Each student will gain first-hand experience working in a variety of roles such as writer/producer/director, assistant director, director of photography/camera operator, camera assistant, grip, gaffer, script supervisor, sound mixer, and editor.
Completed projects are screened at the Final Friday showcase of student work following the weekly lobster dinner. Students leave with a body of work, as well as the knowledge and skills to move forward in their filmmaking careers.
Students work an average of 12 hours each week on campus to cover the cost of their room and board. Rooms and baths are shared.

Instructor: Alex Burnett
Alex Burnett is a New England-based filmmaker and editor who has worked within the worlds of narrative fiction, documentary, experimental cinema, and virtual reality. Having worked as an editor for National Geographic, the NFL, Colgate University, Vitec Group, and Schiempflüg NYC, he has experience with a vast range of companies and artists. His passion lies in creatively tackling the many challenges that come with telling stories through film.
