| Adobe InDesign: Digital Design for Publication

A great intro to this industry-standard software!

InDesign is the industry standard program for creating files that will be published in print or digitally on mobile and web platforms. For the photographer, InDesign can be used to design anything from a multi-signature book to a simple zine or chapbook. It offers greater customization in photo book design than Blurb, especially in terms of text, but requires the artist to find print and binding solutions. For business owners and marketing professionals, InDesign is ideal for designing printed promotional pieces like catalogs, business cards, and pamphlets in-house, and for efficiently producing web content like banner images that feature a logo or other text overlay.

Through lecture and hands-on work, students will learn the basics of creating a publishable file from start to finish. Topics covered will include setting up a document, accounting for page bulk and trimmed edges, creating master pages, designing a cover, importing graphics, formatting text and typography, managing styles, working with paths, managing long documents, and packaging files based on their destination (print, mobile, or web). The class will also feature discussions about successful design and the creative concepts that drive dynamic publications.

This course is project based, but can be modified for students simply hoping to learn the ins-and-outs of the platform. Students working on a project like a catalog or book should come prepared with finalized content—edited images and copy.

Some working knowledge of InDesign is encouraged but not required. The 2-Day Adobe InDesign course is a great introduction to this class for complete beginners.

All times EDT 9-12 Group Demo/Tutorials (with a 15-20min break halfway through);  12-2 Lunch/extended break period; 2-4 Group Demo/Tutorials (with a 10-15min break halfway through); 4-5 generally dedicated to follow-up and additional communications.

Winter/Spring session info: Winter/Spring lodging and meal package available for $525. Includes breakfast and lunch Monday – Friday. Dinner services are not available during our Winter/Spring session. Meal plan (mandatory) without lodging $150. Plan to arrive on Sunday afternoon/evening to be rested for your workshop which will begin Monday morning, following registration. Workshops will end late Friday afternoon. Lodging is booked for a Saturday departure.
