3D Cinematography

Gain a conceptual and practical understanding of digital stereoscopic 3D

Carrie PrattThe very latest breakthrough in entertainment technology is digital stereoscopic 3D. This workshop is for producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, and educators who want to gain an understanding of stereoscopic 3D live-action production.

This course begins with the history of 3D and then presents an overview of the current resurgence of 3D cinema including the key players, why it is happening now, and what is its probable future. Are 3D consumer TVs part of the future? Topics also covered are the key terms and 'buzz words', various techniques for shooting 3D to avoid eyestrain, 2D to 3D conversions, post production workflow, 3D projection systems, budgeting, and potential revenue streams.

The class uses professional stereoscopic motion picture equipment to understand and visualize 3D concepts and then shoot, edit, and screen a short dramatic scene in 3D. By week's end, the students gain a conceptual and practical understanding of 3D filmmaking.

Students are encouraged to watch at least one 3D movie before class and if possible, watch the same film in 2D immediately afterwards.
