Scoring Music for Film and Video

Jun 20 - Jun 26
Sep 12 - Sep 18

Learn how to work with a composer to create a dynamic musical track for your next film or video.
The emotional impact of a film's soundtrack cannot be dismissed. This workshop is for anyone working in film, television or video who wants to enhance their storytelling with music. This course explores how to use music to create dramatic impact and how to harness the power of music to serve the story. The class compares examples of musical scores and examines how they help, or hinder, the storytelling. Students learn why certain scenes benefit from music and others do not. They explore the working relationship between composer and filmmaker through case studies of actual films. The class reviews the filmmaker's notes to the composer, hears the composer's first sketches, reviews follow-up notes, and listens to subsequent revisions. The class also discusses the use of library music and other sources of license-managed music. Students are encouraged to bring works-in-progress to incorporate into the discussions, and come away with a keen understanding and appreciation of the art of scoring music for film and video.
