Panasonic HD & P2 Cinematography

Master the creative possibilities and technical controls of the Panasonic HD VariCam and P2.

Panasonic is at the leading edge of high-definition cameras. This workshop is for experienced DPs, producers, cinematographers and video professionals who want to explore the technical and creative potential of the VariCam and P2 data management. This class outlines the basics of VariCam cinematography including an explanation of the camera menus, selection of formats and Codecs, as well as setting up specific in-camera looks. Explanations are supplemented by demonstration, hands on experimentation, and shooting in the studio and on location. A general overview of digital cinematography includes, shooting basics, camera set-ups and evaluations such as rating equivalent ISO levels, and discussions of the impact of the post production process on camera set-up selection. A wide range of camera accessories is available including lenses, matte boxes, filters, follow focus and zoom control systems; dollies and geared heads and a lighting/grip trailer accompanies the field productions. This workshop also establishes the best practices for P2 data management. This includes P2 card management, taking advantage of metadata, and following the file based contents path from camera to post production, to archiving and asset management. Compatibility of popular post production hardware and software will also be discussed. Content shot is brought through several post production stages. This course provides a bridge between on-set file based productions and post production, and is valuable to camera crews and post production personnel preparing for P2 VariCam projects. All work is reviewed and critiqued. Students who bring a Panasonic HD camera may receive a rebate (call for approval). A Panasonic representative is present at this workshop.
